How often should you resling cams?

Manufacturers say to resling cams about every 5 years, or more often if you climb a lot, or whip a lot.

Many manufacturers do not support cams after 10 years. Therefore some reslinging outfits won’t resling cams that are older than 10 years because of this statement.

We’ve noticed this 5-year resling recommendation seems “excessive” to most climbers. If this is the case, you can certainly resling your cams when you decide they’re questionable. Specifically, if you notice any of the issues listed below, stop using the cams immediately and resling ASAP.

When should I resling my cams?

Resling cams if…

  • Soft and hard spots (inconsistent feeling)
  • High areas of abrasion/rubbing
  • Any rips or tears (any small cuts can cause serious issues)
  • Discoloration from unknown substances
  • Crustiness
  • Melted / burned spots

Does anybody resling tricams?

Yes, Mountain Tools will resling tricams. It’ll cost $11-$13 depending on the tricam size. Note: They do not resling in the same style as the Tricam Evo’s.

Can you resling single loop cams with double loops?

Technically, yes, you can ask for that and some folks will do it, but it’s not recommended.Black Diamond wrote a nice QC Lab article that included their testing on this. Bottom line: You’ll compromise the strength and significantly increase the changes of the thumb loop getting kinked/ruined.

Can you resling nylon cams with thinner Dyneema?

Technically, yes, you can ask for that and some folks will do it, but it’s not recommended. Black Diamond wrote a nice QC Lab article that included their testing on this. Basically, you will compromise the cam holding strength, and you will likely get a kink in the thumb loop when you fall from a solid height.
